FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

FCL or Full Container Load is an ISO standard (International Organization for Standardization) which refers to a 20 or 40ft container loaded with cargo, utilizing the entire space of the container.

On the other hand, LCL or Less than Container Load is a shipment that does not occupy the entire space of a standard sized container. In such instances, several shippers load their cargo onto this single container. While LCL is the inexpensive option for small shipments, it costs more per unit of freight when compared with FCL.

Vessels essentially move in a giant loop, calling from port to port then back again. A slight delay at one port causes a chain reaction for a lag to occur at the rest of the ports in the loop, adding days or even weeks to a transit time. Causes for delays may be:

Impact from weather conditions, industrial action, vessel quarantine, overbooking of cargo on shipments, vessel malfunction/mechanical issues, natural disasters, seasonality, equipment shortages.

Demurrage and detention are two terms that often confuses people in global trade, shipping, freight, and logistics. This has also led to several financial losses many a time. Let’s look at the difference between demurrage and detention. Demurrage in the context of container shipments; relate to cargo, when cargo is loaded in the container, while detention relates to equipment when the container is vacant after unpacking or before packing.

The demand for shipping services is subject to a number of external pressures, including those of a political, economic, and environmental nature. Trade sanctions, conflict, consumer behavior, and harsh weather etc. usually affects demand, and thereby, the cost. As there isn’t a single predictor or reason in the market, but a varying of factors including (but not limited to); destination/ distance, currency, cargo type, fuel costs, seasons, vessel size, rates and costs fluctuate.

As self-explanatory as the term is, port charges refer to the fees levied by port authorities on containers they handle. Some of the port charges involved in container shipments are, Terminal Handling Charges (THC), Early Arrival Charges, Late Arrival Charges, Shifting Charges while Amendment/Cancellation

A Bill of Lading, is an important transport document that has 3 basic purposes or roles.. I will refer to this bill of lading as a normal BL throughout this article..
